Cooling towers are becoming increasingly important in many industries and businesses today. As the temperature of industrial processes rises, it has become more difficult to maintain the right temperature. Marley SPX cooling towers are designed to be high-performance, energy-efficient and durable to withstand extreme weather conditions while keeping your water at an optimal temperature.

They are available in a variety of sizes and designs to accommodate just about any industrial cooling need. These include:

  • Crossflow
  • Counterflow
  • Plume Abatement
  • Forced Draft
  • Natural Draft

A Brief History

Marley, a brand of SPX Cooling Technologies, is a major supplier of cooling towers to the HVAC industry.

Their history dates all the way back to 1922 when Marley was founded as the Power Plant Equipment Company, before changing its name to Marley Company in 1926. Over time, SPX Cooling Technologies acquired several companies until SPX Cooling Technologies was officially established in 2005 and became one of the most successful manufacturers of cooling equipment in North America today.

The Fundamentals of a Marley Cooling Tower and How It Works

Let’s break down the Marley cooling tower fundamentals to understand how they works and why they are needed.

The temperature of the water in these towers is lowered by putting air and water in direct contact in a cooling tower, which is a special kind of heat exchanger. When this happens, a small amount of water evaporates, which then cools the water that is being pumped through the tower.

Through pipes, hot water from an industrial process or an air conditioner condenser is sent to the cooling tower. The water sprays out of nozzles onto banks of material called “fill”. This slows the flow of water through the cooling tower and exposes the water’s surface so that as much air as possible can get in touch with the water. As the water flows through the cooling tower, it is exposed to the air that is being pulled through the tower by the electric motor-driven fan.

When air and water come together, a small amount of water evaporates, which cools the air. The water is then pumped back to the condenser or other heat-absorbing equipment. Then, it will be sent back to the cooling tower to be cooled again.

Why Invest In a Marley Cooling Tower?

Marley’s SPX Cooling Towers are designed with several features and advantages that allow them to perform at the highest level, making them ideal for industrial applications. These include:

High Performance

The Marley cooling tower selection offers high performance, which makes them ideal for large facilities or those that require significant amounts of process cooling. This level of performance also means they can be used in both new constructions and retrofits of existing plants.

Energy and Cost-Efficient

The high efficiency of Marley’s SPX Cooling Towers reduces energy consumption and operating costs while also improving environmental sustainability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions related to energy use. This is achieved through innovative design that minimizes pressure drop across multiple stages within the tower itself.

Rugged and Durable Design

The towers are made from rugged materials that are resistant to corrosion and other outside factors that would affect their performance over time. They’re also easy to install and maintain so you don’t have any extra trouble when it comes time for maintenance or repairs — This ensures you get the most reliable, durable product possible that can stand up to years of use.

Marley Cooling Tower Maintenance Checklist

Although Marley cooling towers are built to last, maintaining your Marley SPX Cooling Tower is critical to its performance and long-term reliability.

Refer to our Marley cooling tower maintenance checklist on how to maintain your cooling tower so it continues providing efficient operation while preventing costly repairs down the road:

  • Monitor your tower’s drift rate
  • Remove debris from the fill and fan decks
  • Check the drift eliminators for blockage
  • Reduce scaling by using a water treatment program
  • Check that the system is operating at optimal pressure
  • Inspect for corrosion inside the tower

Have you gone through the checklist and think it’s a gear issue? We can help. We have a team of trained engineers with decades of experience working on cooling towers and specializing in pump and gear repair.
